That's really cool. I wonder what else is at that house

very cool find. the hole adds a little character

Looks like someone made a washer out of it? Keep looking, dig everything over a 40, or everything repeatable.

I have two theories on the holed with square nail large cents, heard about a pro slavery group that wore them on their coats lapel that was their tell. Also theory two I have is nail a coin up on the entry post to keep witches and evil spirits out.

Nice find! However, for whatever the reason the coin was holed, they may have destroyed a nice and rare Dated coin. Also, the coin may have been a scarce or rare Variety. I wonder if the Date and the majority of the details can be made out once cleaned up?! Hopefully, every coin that you find on the property, will not be similarly holed!

I have found several center holed large cents, all at colonial era churches. They were used as washers for holding the slates on slate roofs. Yours was probably used for the same thing.

Sweet find! taking a foot off you say huh? Ooh man ill be right there!!

Seriously though, POUND that place!

could be a "witch coin" - nailed up in a chimney - I believe?

I like these theories, I read awhile back someone had posted, that it was common place to use LC's as washers, yours has a square hole which is not the norm for holed coins. It also is allot larger then your normal square nail. Just from working construction all my life I feel this coin was "re purposed" for a mechanical reason? Wish I had a time machine, I'd be a star on this site like Ace and BVI, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa lol That's how they found that stuff, there cheating with a time machine, bahahaha
