Steve,

All of your posts and youtube vidio's have inspired me to do some river hunting again. I live in Northern Ohio and have logged in alot of hours in rivers w/very little results. I went out again after watching some of your vids and walked for about 4 hours or a little more. The creek I was walking winds thru some of my best arrowhead hunting country. I took a few pics of the creek so you could see what I was walking. Hope you can help set me on the path to some river points. Thanks!

I'm tinkering with the idea of heading to wakeman OH and hunting the Vermillion. Has anyone hunted, searched the Vermillion?

Looks just like the creeks here in Southern Ohio, I have logged countless hours in 'em, they just don't produce like the ones Steve has! :icon_scratch:

vibes,

When you thinkin' bout commin to wakeman? I live 10 mins from there. The vermillion river is way down right now, looks just like the creek I took pictures of. I suppose if you want some company ramblin around the ole river let me know.

creek,

I hear ya!! Havent figured out how to do this yet either. I know how to find points, just not in the river yet. Maybe when vibes gets over this way we'll be lucky enough to have some rain on the fields. I know I can find them there.

I think it takes a long time to find the kind of spots StevefromMissouri finds that erode into a creek. Then add a lot of record breaking rain and boom you'll hit it big. Since I started hunting creeks this month I've only came up with one scraper and a nice two inch point. Then found in another creek part of a fire pit coming out with nothing near by. So I've logged in about 30 hrs so far. This is not an easy task. But will pay off in the right conditions and terrain. Here's a hint try finding small feeder creeks on major rivers. But, may take time to get through muddy bottoms and nettle steep banks. Sunday went up a feeder creek and found two 200lb+ Indiana green/Attica chert boulders that fell down the slate/shale bank. Hunting near lithic sources can be good!

Yo Steve!

Well the property is owned by a family member (it's produced numerous arrowheads, from my memory as a child)...and I have access to the entire area. I'd sure love some company as I'm new to this, so I'll let ya know when I'm heading that way!

Bent twig,
I live in nortern Ohio as well, albeit closer to the Toledo area.Anyway I've hunted many creeks in my area and have found only a few artifacts. I think its possible to find them, It just hasn't come easy. One of these days perhaps I'll find that special creek. I do remember when I was younger I had a friend whos brother hunted a creek that ran behind some river bluffs and he had a rather fine collection of finds. I've tried that creek myself many times and only found one artifact(a nice 3 inch knife). This year I did find 2 grooved hammers within a couple of feet of one another along a creekbed. Like I said its not impossible maybe just harder., HH Unitas

Here's a photo of the crime scene and of the hammer.

Nice grooved hammer.. Looks like could there be a pestle and a mortar next to it. Hard to tell from the pic. I really like stone tools. They aren't all the nicely polished examples they show in books. So alot of ppl pass them by.

Unitas,

Looks just like here! It sure is inspiring to see a nice insitu shot like that from an Ohio creek. Great find! I just spent 4 hours in another creek yesterday and came out with nothin' but a busted shin. My shin that is! got tangled up in a log jam I was climbing over. I had a hip replacement surgery when I was young and it always scares the crap out of me when fall like that. I was hanging from that leg and about 2 miles from any road.Good thing I'm still fairly young(38). Always keep my cell phone w/me and turned off in case I got to use it for someone to come get me. Here are a few pics from yesterdays creek walk.

That really does look like the same creek. I'm sure its not though.I can see why you would want to walk it, it's loaded with rocks to look at. Good Luck, Unitas
