Found this cool button today, does anyone happen to know what the writing on the front means?:icon_scratch:

I'm no authority on buttons, but that looks military to me. Still has some of the gold gilt showing through the green patina. Is there a back stamp on it? That will be helpful in identifying. Big Congrats on a cool button save!

I specialize I pre-1865 buttons and it is one I have not seen this button. the style of lettering looks late 19th century to me, or maybe even early 20th century. At first look I thought that the button had "BV" on it; but it looks like an "&" is between the letters for "B&V". So if it really says "B&V" my hunch would be civilian in nature. maybe like a uniform button off a fancy hotel, restaurant, school, etc. maybe someone here will nail it down for you. hopefully it turns out to have a neat history...
