Hi Chriseneim,

It looks like the date is 1967. They stopped making silver dimes in 1964.

It is an odd defect in the dime and almost appears as if it were done on purpose with a grinder or something.

You might consider contacting a coin shop to get an accurate appraisal.

Good luck and it is a cool find.

It could be what is left from a gold anodized coating after someone ground down the edge & used it on a trophy or something :dontknow:

Hi Reed,

Good point. Upon closer inspection, it almost looks like it could have been mounted in a necklace or something.

It is quite possible that the coin is someone's poor attempt to create a "Bottle Cap Coin Error" which happens when a coin is struck outside of the Collar but to create the Bottle Cap effect, the coin must be struck perfectly centered. See the link below but it only shows one side of the coin which is concaved.

I have found dimes with similar wear pattern in large cloths dryers. Coins get stuck inside the machine and can wear for a long time until someone figures out how to get them out.

You could weigh it, or ask a jeweler to do so. A clad dime should weigh around 2.27 grams. If it has been ground, I'd expect less. :)

Looks like post mint damage

I think PatrickD got it right. I believe it was on a necklace in a mount and the date is the year of the recipients birth.
