Intriguing item. Top flaking transverse (side-to-side) but removed @ 90 degrees (end thinning). Not necessarily Paleo, but might be. Or so it appears, at least.

Both sides show what appears to be use wear scars at several points along their edges if you look at them closely -- which is what you do when you're trying to determine whether a flake was used. If it wasn't used, and used forcefully enough to remove chips, these flake scars remain to be explained. Illusions ?

FWIW

I know what you're suppose to see to determine use wear Mr. Bill. I just can't see it in the pictures provided. They don't blow up very much at all when you click on them and the last one is out of focus.

Second picture: 10:00, 3:00 & 5:00. First picture: 8:00 on around to 1:00. That's what it looks like on this end without magnifying them at all.

Then again, maybe I'm imagining things.

The guy has posted plenty of cool things in the past and you are going to question his in hand assessment? Don’t think he would have posted if he wasn’t pretty confident about it.

Thanks for the comments everyone! I have been hunting artifacts for a long time & I do know what the difference between debitage & a utilized flake & yes I would of never posted it if I thought it was just debitage! I like it very unusual little piece!

My bad fellas. Not trying to offend anyone. I'll try and keep my opinions to myself from now onward unless asked.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO

I know more as a result of being wrong about things than I did before I posted about
them.

Discussion flushes facts & insights out of the weeds that nobody noticed before.

You would think I was out of my mind when I showed you (if I could) one of my very favorite flake tools (careful, deliberate re-edging, Folsom style) until I handed you a double lens magnifier to examine it with. It's a little curved flake of Coshocton chert that would fit on your little fingernail without extending over the sides. Somebody really loved that material & was using every scrap of it he had left. This particular one, from its extreme curvature, must have come from re-tipping a little limace.

Thing is, you've got to get up close & personal with stuff to see what was going on with it.

Dismounting soapbox.

Reading my above post again I apologize for the tone. I think the rush to term things natural or debitage is preventing people from posting questionable stuff, which are usually the fun threads, when there is already a lack of postings. Still much better here than some other forums I have tried.
