Back in the 20s, the Strawn Merchandise Co. was owned by the Strawn Coal Company. The SCC issued coupons and token that could only be used at the stores of the SMC.

there is an aluminum & brass variety of the one you found. both rated R-7 out of 10. tokencatalog.com has a few listed with very good pictures

the abbrev of the die maker is in the center and reads -- /so. stp. & sta. co., / richmomd., / va. the slashes are line breaks
