Police: Teen tried redeem stolen coin worth $4,500

Grayling -- Authorities say a northern Michigan teen accused of trying to cash in a stolen coin worth $4,500 has been arraigned.

The Bay City Times says 19-year-old Dustin Gohn of Frederic faces a single count of larceny from a building.

Grayling Sheriff Kirk Wakefield says a $20 coin from 1890 was among those Gohn tried to redeem at face value at a bank on Aug. 24.

Wakefield said an Internet search by bank employees revealed the rare coin's value and prompted a call to police.

Police said Gohn told them he stole the coins from a safe in a relative's garage.

Gohn is free on $500 bond pending a Sept. 8 preliminary hearing.

Wakefield said the coins will be returned to the owner.

Grayling is about 175 miles north of Detroit.
