Maybe I need some help with this one......what is the meaning of clad coin?

I know that the US mint quit making silver coins in 1964 and started make imitation coins
as my Mother used to call them, in 1965.
Am I missing something?

Clad basically means a multi-metal coin. Our clad coins, 1965 and later, are layers of metals in the coin. If you look at the edge, you can see the layers with the copper color in the middle.

Some are silver clad also. 40% silver Eisenhower Dollar from 65-71.
