I am planning on traveling out of state for a Civil War Relic hunt next month, and was hoping someone would have a suggestion for a collapsible shovel that I could pack in a suitcase that would work well enough in the field. I've never been relic hunting before, so all I've ever dug with is a Lesche digging tool. I think a shovel of some sort would be much better suited to Civil War relic hunting, but I need something that I can pack into a suitcase to check under the plane.

Thanks,

Jim

time4me ,

snake35 has got it right. The army folding entrenching tool is cheap and indestructible. I would add that you should re-handle it with a "D" shovel handle and the unfolded length should reach the ground so you can also use it as a "cane" in the woods or in rough going. I use one, and it has saved me a nasty fall more than once. Joe

I have a WWII web belt (cheap from any Army surplus), Went to Home depot got a hammer hanger that carpenters use to put on the web belt, and then a wooden handle WWII entrenching tool. Keep it in the open position and the wooden handle slips through the metal hammer hanger on the belt. Get a signal and you just reach behind you and grab the shovel, pull it through and dig, easy to hang back on the belt. I have gone with people who carry the shovel under their arm pit....until they have seen how I do it.

Great idea RJW4LAW!!!  I'm going to use that idea to hunt around in the woods, if you wouldn't mind. Great hunting and good luck!! Regards, Skypilot Wp Forever!!!

I use a WWll entrenching tool also. They are getting harder to find. Predator tools online sells their own version of the entrenching tool, which should last forever.
