In the early 20th century, the traditional symbol of the Democratic Party in Midwestern states such as Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio was the rooster, as opposed to the Republican eagle. This symbol still appears on Kentucky and Indiana ballots.

The "Democrat Club" button dates from 1888. There is another version which shows a rooster surrounded by the names "Cleveland" and "Thurman, " the 1888 Democrat presidential and vice presidential candidates, respectively.

There is also an 1888 "Republican Club" button, which displays a Federal eagle similar to the one used on U.S. Army general service buttons of the mid 1800's. (It's possible that there's also a similar button with the names of the Republican candidates, Harrison and Morton, but I haven't seen one.)
