Right on top of the ground, couldnt believe it looks toasted. But ill keep it in oil , maybe i can get a date. This week im going to hammer the spot. Ill post some pics of where i found it as i didnt have my phone on me. 20161101_205732.webp

That's cool man! I still haven't made a surface pick for an old coin but I hear of it happening every now and then. My shallowest large cent was ~1". Good eyes!
 
My oldest surface find was a mercury dime.

Should have elaborated my fault. I waved my detector on the ground and it blew my eardrums out. I figured it was junk big can. Moved over a leaf and there it was. What do you guys think? Detectorist drop? Or ? Still cant believe it. Brass casing is very old 2" down next to it.
 
I work all week, get home to late. So sat or sun for me, to go detecting.
 
I think it is a drop from a fellow detectorist. His loss = your gain. Congrats on that sweet find. :occasion14:
 
They sound like that at 6" deep. Big coppers are a favorite to find. Congrats.
