I first started metal detecting in 1968. It was a different hobby at that time. 1/3 or more of the coins I found were silver and being the first or near the first to look around my old high school, I found thirty-eight class rings. I had a jewelry store at the time, I put them in a ring case and displayed them in my window. I ran an ad in the paper that anyone that could prove ownership was welcome to have their ring back. I had a lot of people come look and ended up with three of them being stolen. I moved them to the safe and in the early 1980's when gold got so high, I sold them for scrap. At that time, before the internet, it wasn't so easy to find the owners and the school superintendent didn't care to help me locate anyone.
