The Tennessee Trio opened the fall relic season at a hard hunted CSA camp in southern Tennessee last week. For those who think these are only light hunted sites we hunt, think again. This site was discovered in the 1970s and has been double grid searched by hunters who knew what they were doing more than once. Many, many hunters have searched there as the landowner never turned anyone down. Tenn. Josh had the best bullet. It was a .58 3 ringer that had an unusual ramrod mark on the tip closely followed by Dman’s dropped .577 cal. Enfield. Josh had the only button-a flat cuff button. One of my finds was the lead washer that looks like it was where a pinhole cavity Sharps or captured Williams Cleaner was cut to make a washer. Anybody else dug them or know any real purpose for them? Not anything exciting last week but it felt good to see the Trio hunting together again.
Dman and I recovered a few more full and broken horseshoes yesterday morning for the “Relics for Kids” project. I cleaned and coated 40 pieces of 6 full horseshoes, a pot handle, 4 cooking pot pieces, and 29 broken horseshoe pieces. I wrote a history of the C.S.A. Cavalry camp where we dug these relics to give away with each relic.
I dug the WW2 sterling silver Marksman medal, brass rosette (varying opinions on CW or post CW), and 1935 Buff while hunting a remote camp area where some old homes were located. About 3 years ago, I dug a “Pistol” badge there that would have attached under the medal from yesterday (if I can find it-LOL).
The last two pics are of some of the 5th Graders who won a relic in the drawing at first period class and the entire class with my wife who is the Librarian. I wasn’t sure how many kids would even want a CW relic but all but three girls in that first class wanted to be in the drawing. The drawings will go on all week as each class of 3rd-5th graders have their scheduled time in the library.
The Tennessee Trio of Dman, TENN Josh, and I wish you great hunting this fall, Quindy.
