Relic Hunting
The Tennessee Trio opened the fall relic season at a hard hunted CSA camp in southern Tennessee last week. For those who think these are only light hunted sites we hunt, think again. This site was discovered in the 1970s and has been double grid searched by hunters who knew what they were doing more than once. Many, many hunters have searched there as the landowner never turned anyone down. Tenn. Josh had the best bullet. It was a .58 3 ringer that had an unusual ramrod mark on the tip closely followed by Dman’s dropped .577 cal. Enfield. Josh had the only button-a flat cuff button. One of my finds was the lead washer that looks like it was where a pinhole cavity Sharps or captured Williams Cleaner was cut to make a washer. Anybody else dug them or know any real purpose for them? Not anything exciting last week but it felt good to see the Trio hunting together again.
Dman and I recovered a few more full and broken horseshoes yesterday morning for the “Relics for Kids” project. I cleaned and coated 40 pieces of 6 full horseshoes, a pot handle, 4 cooking pot pieces, and 29 broken horseshoe pieces. I wrote a history of the C.S.A. Cavalry camp where we dug these relics to give away with each relic.
I dug the WW2 sterling silver Marksman medal, brass rosette (varying opinions on CW or post CW), and 1935 Buff while hunting a remote camp area where some old homes were located. About 3 years ago, I dug a “Pistol” badge there that would have attached under the medal from yesterday (if I can find it-LOL).
The last two pics are of some of the 5th Graders who won a relic in the drawing at first period class and the entire class with my wife who is the Librarian. I wasn’t sure how many kids would even want a CW relic but all but three girls in that first class wanted to be in the drawing. The drawings will go on all week as each class of 3rd-5th graders have their scheduled time in the library.
The Tennessee Trio of Dman, TENN Josh, and I wish you great hunting this fall, Quindy.

Thanks Nana. It was really pitiful when one little girl teared up and said" Mr. Indiana Jones, I want a rare University of Alabama Cadet button". Just send me the one you found and I'll see if I can get it to her-LOL. Q.

Dman,
You cheap #@&%!!! Take those kids out to ChuckE Cheese for some real fun. Oh sorry, my bad, this is Quindy's post. :violent1:

Quindy,
You cheap #@&%!!! Just kidding. That's a great thing you are doing for the kids, AND you get to have lunch (probably free) with your wife too. How she puts up with you I will never know. :tongue3: :laughing9:
If you need more horseshoes let me know, I'll send them to you and you can pay shipping.
Great recoveries today guys. Way to start off the season. Glad to see Dman back out again. I wonder how long he will last this season without breaking a bone? :dontknow: The bets are on.

Thanks MM. Somebody will probably break his neck due to him aggravating them-LOL. HH, Q.

You are a very kind hearted person, I have given away alot of relics but not in a class room setting like you did. My hats off to you bud! HH

Hey Q, you're a good man Charlie Brown!!! I know those kids loved every minute of it, and you never know who's life you touched today. :notworthy: I agree with Nana, you need to go dig some more :laughing7: so the kids who didn't get a prize will get one next time. . . .you can always take a baggie full of CW bone buttons to make sure you have enough goodies. Kudos on a job well done! Breezie

Drop me a line if you need some stuff from Dover. I have a lot of "stuff" I've dug around Ft. Donelson. You're doing a GREAT thing with those kids. With you they'll learn the 'real' history, and not the PC version. Thanks for what you're doing.

Thanks MK and Breezie. Roger, I haven't heard anything from you in a coon's age. Glad you're still digging Dover over there.
Folks, here is how subtly that early American and CW history is being downplayed in schools these days. After leaving the school yesterday, I stopped by the nearby county school board office. The Director of Schools is a longtime friend and history buff. I knew he would want to see the "Acorn" bullet. He immediately recognized it as a carved bullet and I visited with him for 30 minutes or so. He was unaware that the local high school American history course required for students and usually taken by seniors STARTS with the year of 1875. If kids don't get an appreciation of early American and CW history in elementary and middle school, they have missed it. WE must take every opportunity to foster an appreciation of history in kids or they will grow up thinking George Washington is a former rock star. HH, Quindy.

You are a great person Quindy. Those kids will remeber that for a while. Kudos to you for starting the ball rolling at the School board, you are 100% correct on that one buddy.Congrats to the Trio, Great saves there!

I really enjoyed collecting relics for the kids. I wished I could have been there to see the kids faces.

Great job Quindy, not just with recovering the relics, but going the extra mile to help educate the kids on where we all came from. Kudos! Bill

When they started studying the CW in the library and my wife showed them some relics, they mentioned seeing some like that at a store in Lafayette (your store) when their parents shopped there. She told them we hunted together. Your favourite thing-future customeres-LOL. If that site works out as it should tomorrow, we'll go with Josh Monday or earlier. Q.
