Sorry for the long post, but feeling pretty sick about what happened today and thought writing about it might be therapeutic.

So, I was looking forward to today for the past few days, because I was going to a park / campground I like to detect and had about 5 hours all to myself.

I hunted for about 2.5 hours in one location, and then drove to another campsite in the park to spend the next couple of hours. After about 45 minutes or so in this new location, I was digging the latest detection and noticed that my wedding ring was gone. I felt sick. I checked all around the hole and dirt I was just digging through, and then retraced the path I had taken for quite a ways back towards the car. Then I turned around and retraced my path all the way back to that latest hole again, and then all the way back to my car. No ring.

Now I feel really stupid for wearing the ring while detecting out in the campsites, fields and trails. I have always worn my wedding ring while detecting, as it is on my left hand, and I dig with my right hand and pass the dirt over my coil with my right hand - the ring never interefered with detecting. I normally wear a ring on my right hand too, and this one I take off and leave in my car so I can pass the dirt over my coil. It was quite cold today, and I think that it being cold, along with the very dry dusty ground I was digging in was the recipe for disaster - my fingers were a bit skinnier due to the cold weather, and the dust caused the ring to simply slip right off.

If there can be any good news to this story, the ring I lost was not my original wedding ring. My original wedding ring is a basic yellow gold band, and has an engraving on the inside from my wife. I bought myself a different ring a couple of years ago, as I wanted a white gold colored ring. The ring I ended up buying was actually "grey" gold, 18K, and made a special way by a german company. It was about $2,000, and I've worn it every day since I bought it. Now it is lost along a hiking trail or in an open overgrown field. Man, am I ever depressed about this.

As soon as I got home I got out my original wedding ring, and I'm wearing it now. Lesson learned - I will never wear any rings again while out detecting.

Oh, my take for the day was one 1948 rosie, a 1950 wheatie, a ton of clad and a ton of bullet shells.

I'll probably head back out to the area again and try to cover some of the same ground that I was over today, but I didn't stay in one specific area today - I wandered quite randomly through fields, sometimes on the trails, sometimes off the trails. Finding the ring will be one in a million.

Totally bummed and feeling very stupid.

That really sucks, I'd be out there tomorrow retracing your steps the best you can. Thats a lot of money to lose, not to mention sentimental value.

sorry....that sucks....i would go back and just pretend your detecting the ground for the first time...start from your car and just hunt like you would if you werent hunting anything in particular....you'd be surprised...you,ll probably retrace 80% of your route from the first time....the same things that caught your eye and caused you to wander the first time will most likely cause you to wander again...remember your route is etched in your subconcious...and it remembers it exactly...if you try to retrieve it you'll never remember....if you try what i said your subconcious will guide you on the right path.....i know what your thinking :tard: :tongue3: but i have used this method before to find my way back into good hunting spots that i hadnt hunted in years...and the same contour, trees and rocks that i reacted to by going around or down, i reacted to once again and would find my way to the exact spot many years later....why not give it a shot ...cant hurt anymore than it already has...keep a positive attitude and good luck

mistergee is right - many places that I've photographed have been abandoned homes out in the woods - many of them not close to the main road. If you just "start fresh" you'll lead yourself right to those areas you were at. It's definitely worth a shot - we'll be keeping you in our thoughts...

Hang tough and just systematically retrace your steps. Good luck and give us an update if you find it!!

I have faith that you can recover the ring. If you can't get back there to hunt very soon, I would call the office and report it missing in case anyone happens to see it.

Hey Time.....Sorry to hear of your loss. but you can't beat yourself up, buddy....but probably a lesson learned the hard way. You're not the first (I've done it too) and you certainly won't be the last. I hope you're going to search for it, and I wish you good luck in finding it!! Maybe your situation will have a happy ending....I hope so!

Well, hopefully you're gonna find your ring on a shelf in the garage or somewhere else you did some work and forgot about it.
I'll keep my fingers crossed.

That sucks! I did the same the other day with new pair of ray ban sunglasses. I was able to find them.

Good luck and i hope you find it.

I would do the same and not wear my ring but its .. well .. sorta stuck.

Sorry to hear of your lost ring..

I say Group Hunt to find it.

I wear both my rings when detecting but I also wear gloves.

Never been married, so I haven't lost any rings. Pinpointers, tools, even a shovel that I couldn't fit in the trunk of my car, yeah, lost them. Get some of your buddies out there with a case of beer reward. You'll find it.

Thanks for all the words of encouragement everyone. It's nice to have some moral support when you are feeling down. On the bright side, like I said in the original post - while the ring I lost was expensive, and it makes me sick that it fell off somewhere out in the openspace hills and trails, it was not my original wedding ring that says "JIM - I LOVE YOU. TRACEY" inside. I'm wearing this one now, and even if I find the other ring, I've decided to keep wearing this one (but take it off anytime I go detecting or in the water for any reason!!!!!).

So I've cleared my plate tomorrow from 9am to 2pm, and I'm heading back to the campground trails to retrace my steps as best I can. I figure I am just going to take it really slow, and extend my sweeps out as far as I can as I try to mimick the walking pattern I took on Wednesday, overlapping my sweeps as best I can.

Can anyone tell me if an 18K white gold (or "grey" gold in this case) ring will register about the same as an 18K yellow gold ring would on my Explorer II? I wish I knew where on the smartfind matrix or what numbers on the digital matrix I should be looking for.

If I don't find the ring, at least I will have spend another 4 hours or so in some of the most beautiful scenic areas I know.

Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Jim

I'm sure you checked inside your glove, and in the trunk or anywhere you put the gloves.

I was going to suggest just what SilverBob did. Host a small group hunt in the area with a special prize for the one who finds the rings. Hopefully you have other hunters close by who would participate..... Just a thought. Hope you find them!

I hope you find it!

Sorry to hear about the lost ring. Get a few buddies and hit the area again. It will turn up.

Have faith.

Let us know when you find it.

:>)

I anticipate the good news that you not only found your ring, but you also found a key date coin in the process!

Well, I went back to the campground and spent about 4 hours traversing all of the trails and hillsides that I covered on Wednesday, but didn't find my ring. Now I'm beginning to wonder if I might have lost it at the first campsite, and just didn't notice it was gone until after I drove over to the second campsite and wandered the trails detecting and digging for another hour. I really thought I might find it today.

On the bright side, it was a beautiful day today and I found a few keepers...

Got a 1964 rosie and three wheat cents - 1919, 1927 and 1958.

The cool find of the day, however, is the NRA Marksman medal - 50 feet.
