Detector(s) used
BH, Prizm IV, Tesoro Cortez!
Looking for a good coin shooter from Santa. I would appreciate any input from the Michigan contingent of this forum. You can see what I'm using now. I have an old school which I think should produce some silver but my current detectors can't seem to find. I like the simplicity and light weight of the Tesoro's and from all I read they go pretty deep. Yes, I know I still have to learn what they are telling me, but again, just would like to hear from the local guys and gals.

Thanks, Jim

I've extensively used the Tejon and Deleon(similar to the Cortez). Both will work good for coin hunting, and you would be happy with either. They are two very different machines that are hard to compare. I think you have to evaluate where you hunt most and decide if you MUST have the LCD screen. The Tejon doesn't have the screen, but with a little practice you can get all that info from the Tejon and will never miss the screen.

I'd say in a trashy park, go with the Cortez because it has the notch feature. If an old cellar hole - go with the Tejon. I like the Tejon better. The depth on the two is similar, but the Tejon is deeper on low conductive items like Nickels because of the higher frequency. If you ask specific questions about the two, I can give you a better idea of what I like and don't like.

Thank you so much for responding SaginawIan! I was really hoping you would give me your input, as I have been reading many of your posts. I know you have Tesoro's and you rate them highly. I have also been reading about your new Fisher!

OK here's my story: I work a heavy schedule so weekends are my main hunting time. I can usually get out Sat. and Sun. mornings for 2 to 3 hrs early morning. That means area schools (some are old: 20's - 40's era) and soccer/baseball feilds. I think there is some older silver in the old schools and some gold/silver that my current detectors aren't gettimg from the playing fields. My first detector (BH) is a tone detector, and I learned the tones pretty well, but I felt wasn't very deep. With the prizm, I seemed to rely too much on the screen because the tones weren't so good. I kinda want to get back to basics but wouldn't mind learning the VDI no.'s too

Thanks, Jim

radiemaker,

I agree with SaginawIan on the Tesoro's. Not be be overlooked is the Tone / sum mode on the Cortez. It really does resolve mixed signals and tells you first by tone then visual readout when it has done so. Because you didn't mention relic hunting I would tend to think that the Cortez might be a better choice for you.
