MXT Pro, Xterra 705
As stated in a previous post, have a bounty hunter quickdraw II. Decent at finding articles but pinpointing leaves alot to be desired. Should I upgrade to a silver umax where pinpointing might still be out or an ace 250 where pinpointing might be closer. Am a newbie and know time spent with the machine is a requirement, but which would be better and a more suitable upgrade over the bountyhunter.

OK, add the Fisher f2 in the mix. I see it has the pinpoint feature similar to the ace 250. If I'm correct on replies from a different site, the silver umax would be better pinpointing than my BH but does not have a pinpoint feature. Just trying to end my frustration with the BH and pinpointing so don't want to make an uneducated choice this time.

Hi Gambler, I saw your other post and replied there also. Don't get hung up on those pinpoint features some metal detectors have. My vaquero has the pinpoint feature and I only use it for ground balancing. The silver umax doesn't have a pinpoint feature because it doesn't need one. When you X the target, it will be where the two lines cross. Not saying anything bad about the Ace. It too is a good detector, there are some people on here that find some great things with one. I've never used the Ace but have used the silver and can tell you, it pinpoints dead on.

The 250 can not hold a candle to a Silver uMax for pin pointing.

Tesoroes respond so fast, you do not need a pin point mode.

The actual performance is similar with both machines. They
each have their strong points.

In general, the 250 may have a small edge on coins and the
Silver has the edge with trashy sights, and probably finds gold
jewelry a little better.

The 250 has a display and the Silver don't.

I personally think the Silver is more fun to use.

I have both detectors and the only difference I can see is that the 250 gives you a little more information on what the target might be. Notice I said "might" because no detector is 100% dead sure perfect on identifying targets. The ACE is a little more precise at seeing how deep a target is. But both are excellent little detectors. You won't go wrong either way. Monty

If you're the kind of person that likes LCD screens, even if they're not necessarily accurate, get the 250.

If you are comfortable with an audio machine, definitely get the Silver uMax as the pinpointing is better as is the depth.

They both great machines and Garrett has sold a ton of 250's to very enthusiastic owners.

You won't go wrong either way.

As pinpointing was specifically mentioned it could be the decider as the Tesoro pinpoints dead on and the Garrett doesn't. With the 250 pinpointing moves with depth.

The lifetime warranty is also a big plus with Tesoro.

A lot of people have mentioned pinpointing problems with the ACE 250, but I have never had a moment's problem. I never have been able to figure out how other people have a problem. In my experience every detector is just a bit different and the ACE is no exception. The thing you have to remember on the ACE is to keep the sensitivity at about 4 instead of cranking it up as with other types. Cranking up the sensitivity is counter productive and exceeds the best operating range. That's just a little tip I have learned in the past few years. Monty

The problem is that many cheap machines can't handle higher sensitivity levels and there are places such as dry sand where you do need to up the sensitivity to gain sufficient depth. On Florida beaches the 250 can be used at maximum sensitivity and then the deep targets do move along from the hot spot point for shallow targets.

Can't argue with that as I haven't ever used my 250 for beach hunting. Monty
