Does it have both of the rubber friction washers installed? It shouldn't be loose.

It has both rubber friction pieces. I don't understand how loose it should be. When I use the detector the coil moves and is not balanced towards the ground. How tight did you tighten the coil? I know it says do not over tighten but I feel that is the only way to possibly make the coil stiffer. Maybe I got a dud.

Dano,
For myself I tighten it hand tight. Generally as tight as I can. Wife is always complaining I put caps back on stuff to tight. Don't use a wrench or pliers, that would be to much.

plus....call Tesoro and explain your problem over the phone....they're always helpful!

You might have put something in wrong on the coil end. But You should just tighten it up by hand like said above and do that in till it will not move very easy .
You want it where you can put the coil on the ground to level it out for the way you hold the detector , then you can raise it up to detect and the coil should not move around when you swing it back and forth . If it is not tight then call Tesoro as they are very good at helping and will get you fixed up if there is a problem .
Make sure that when your coil is all the way forward or backward that the connection on wire input is not binding . So make sure that you have just enough slack in the line at the bottom so your coil will be able to move freely with out binding.

Mine fits so snuggly that I probably don't even need the bolt!!
It was very hard getting coil ears over the pole tip.
Perhaps the problem is that the washers are not thick enough for some reason.
They should protrude slightly out of the recessed areas of the pole tip.

Mine was the same way. I was worried about breaking the ears when I inserted the coil because mine was so tight. There should be no wobble at all from the coil when it is properly inserted and tightened. Any wobble can lead to wobble of the cable which will potentially lead to falsing (especially at high sensitivity settings).

I agree that you should call Tesoro. They will make it right.
