Hello all,,,
I had received a call Tuesday night and one of my friends, friends had been hunting at the cache site and found an 1837? (3)cent piece. So, it was off to the cache site for me again today to try and find one myself. No luck with that, but I did find an interesting tag/token? It looks as though it may have been some sort of token at one time then turned into a tag, Not a clue...
Token_Tested.jpg

The obverse reads, " TESTED and SEALED / INDIANA " with what looks like either a dog, or maybe a bull in the forground, two mountains, or hills, with a sun coming up behind them. Also some sort of "Bunch of grapes", or something on the left hand side just inside the circle...

The reverse simply reads, " IND.S / 24 "...
You can follow the link below for a closeup of the obverse:

Any info on this piece would be greatly appreciated....
Good luck, & Happy hunting~

GREAT GOING, I HAVE NOT SEEN ONE OF THOSE BEFORE, CONGRATS :o

This Indiana state inspection tag and similar tags from Ohio are illustrated on p. 180 of Alpert & Elman's book, Tokens & Medals. I believe they are used by the state department of agriculture, at least in some case to certify that scales have been tested and approved.

the picture in the background is the state seal

Nana ;)

Great research too ya'll!

Thank you all for the comments...
And Thank you PBK, and ivy_walls for the great info. I spent about a half and hour yesterday google'ing with no luck. I should have known to just come here first. This forum, and the people on it, have never let me down... You'd of thought, being from Indiana, I would have recognized the seal, but I didn't even think about it...

After receiving your info about it, I google'd it again and found out the Indiana state seal has been altered several times. The closest representation of the pic on this one can be seen under Roman# "VI. A Comment from 1919" on this page:
Indiana Historical Bureau

The rising sun is more to the right side on this one, and on the one depicted there, although most of them have the sun rising over towards the left side of the seal... There are several versions shown on the bottom of the page with a time line, but all of those have the sun rising on the left side as well...

Thanks again all, I hope all are doing well...
Good luck, & Happy hunting~

Nice token Leon.

How much water did you have to pour on the ground to try and dig through the concrete here that they call dirt... :D :D

Dave

Thanks again guys,,,
Ya Dave,,, it is very dry around here. What I've been doing is hunting some low areas that stay under the shade of trees most of the day. I noticed yesterday though, that even those areas are getting pretty dry...

Good luck all, & Happy hunting~
