Hi
This is a Texas piece. It was authenticated by the best in the business for Texas points. Was told it was Clovis based on the fact that both sides are thinned/fluted. It’s not midland which is what I thought it may be.
Here’s the question-Is this partially fluted or in the process of being refluted? The base is not ground and appears to be set up for “enterline” fluting on one side. It’s also articulate which is interesting. It also has a flake scar obscured by a lateral flake scar. The other has 3 thin flute scars with hinge fractures. The lateral edges are smooth-so I’ll assume it was hafted.
I’m trying to learn/understand how this was made and was it refluted?
Thanks

Nice looking piece whatever it is. You would think the base would be ground if it was a clovis though.

That's a cool point.

Can you post a picture of the other side? The angled pictures are helpful, but it's hard to fit them together without both sides.

My initial thought is that it looks more Midland-ish than Clovis, but that's just a quick view. How think it thick is it? Flat or domed? Which part of Texas? (Approximately, Western part, Eastern, CenTex?)

Yes!

Also, shouldn't there be a prepared platform or nipple on the base if it was planned to be fluted?

Here are other pics. It’s 10mm thick which I believe is too thick for midlands. They are fluted on one side. The side I’m showing is heavily hinge fractured. I believe the side with the nipple was set up for an “enterline” flute which is why the base is not ground. Those two “flutes” are very concave.

Interesting point.

I'm not seeing Clovis there, but if the Authenticator knows paleo well, then he certainly might see something in hand I can't in the picture. The tip isn't pictured, but it looks like a bit of putty restoration. The sides of the base look ground, not surprised the inside indent isn't ground. If the tip is dinged, is it an impact fracture?

The base looks like an unfluted Folsom to me, but the sides on the base are angled more than most.

10mm would be thicker than expected for West Texas Midlands. Central & Eastern Texas Midlands seem to run from thin to slightly thicker. Both East & West Texas have some regional types that can be built and thinned like that (Belen, Barber, Levi, ST Mary Hall, etc.) Plainview or even Goshen could be options. But nothing is sticks out to me as a classic match.

Cool point, I enjoyed looking at it.

The base and symmetrical shape is definitely remnant of Folsom/Midland. Has the tip been restored. It looks off to me.

Here's a fluted point I made. Heated KY flint. I fluted the side with the bullseye, then flipped it over and started preparing the second side for fluting. I never fluted it as I was worried about folding it. It has such a nice bullseye and is a rare flint type. So, my never finished second side looks quite a bit like your piece. Just my 2-cents. Gary
