Since the announcement that pennies are not going to be produced anymore when this last batch runs out, should we start saving all pennies or will there still be a lifetime's worth that will stay in circulation? Does the value on existing pennies immediately rise, or does it remain stable? I'll be honest, I absolutely hate the new pennies with the shield on them. They look too much like an arcade token you would use to play a video game at the mall. But if they are now worth $6 each, what the hell. I loves me some tokens.

For the only way that you will receive a $6 bounty is if you have 12 rolls of pennies.

The last Canadian penny minted was 13 yrs ago.
The ads for 50 rolls for $40 are plenty.
Best of luck on your $6 per penny.

Ain’t gonna lie…. The end of the penny is going to sting for me personally. My Dad and I have bonded over collecting Lincoln Cents my whole life. Proud to say, got them all….
Also, I’ve had a stiffy for collecting a roll of each year and their mint marks since I was a kid….i know I’ll never get a roll of them all, but I’m pretty proud of the ones I got. I also get a rise when I find the first one of the year, usually by the end of February.
I’ve been lazy looking for the last few years of D’s
I’d rather find them in the wild than buy rolls at a time. I reckon I need to get back to CRH so I can fill those tubes, before they disappear.

When the cent is finally discontinued, it’s death will be a lingering death, taking a few years for the hundreds of billions in bank vaults today to disappear completely.

I will continue to sort four boxes a week for wheats, memorial coppers, and varieties until it is over.

I heard Bessent talking about changing the nickel composition as well.
We are watching our currency lose value before our eyes.
Or what was previously minted continue to gain in value.

What intrinsic value does a zinc cent have? Especially after it's been buried for a while. Good riddance IMO! We'll still be digging those pieces of junk for decades, but at least they will become fewer and fewer as the years go by. Now we'll just have to be worried about what they will use to make any new coins. Hopefully, they don't go the Canadian route and make them ferrous.

I agree with cudamark. Really, are zinc pennies covered in copper worth, or might someday be worth, anything?

In the philosophical sense, they are worth 4 cents. Once pennies are gone from circulation the final price you pay for something will be rounded up, not down, thereby costing you 4 cents more instead of 1 cent less.

Watch the complaints when they normally just get throw them away. I found six just outside the door at CVS not long after going in when there were none. Same at the grocery store, all over the ground. But heavens forbid they might round up a cent or two. Or down.... :BangHead:

There's so much to hate. Nothing like a good old-fashioned "Largie". IHPs & Flying eagles are great too.
Now, the copper Lincolns from 1982 & earlier will have their own place in history.
It's amazing how far the penny has changed.
Now, the hated zinc shield pennies are so bad, they look like they've been soaked in sulfuric acid after only 1 or 2 years in the ground. J.T.G.

Take solace in knowing that the copper clad zinc is by its very nature a self destructive combination, a galvanic cell essentially, and when in contact with moisture it will begin to dissolve. Give it less than a quarter century and most zinc pennies in the ground will be undetectable dust.
