Went to the Big City today on personal business, and 6 of 8 (grocery) stores let me buy the halves. "SSCC", self service coin counter. You see the finds (upside down-oh well)

6 stores had $5.50, $6.50, $7.50, $19, $21.50, and $23 or about $83 dollars in halves if my math is right. You just never know unless you ask...

That "One Penny"/"H.T.W.S.S.T.K.S." coin/token?? Looked it up: Masonic Token, Collectible, value unknown to me.

Its always worth the ask ! All they can say is no. Looks like you did well.

Nice job. Congrats

Forgive my ignorance, but I want to understand this. You went to the grocery store and asked someone if you could buy half-dollars? I want to try this, who in the store did you ask? Those machines are usually automated and every time I ask a store employee for anything they don't know a thing. Congrats on the haul and I'd very much like to try this, any advice helps. Mark in Colorado.

I asked the other day and the guy said no, they don't sell the change, that's the stores change to use for registers.

I said so? you're not losing anything - I'll give you quarters for halfs, or dimes for halfs - you'll still have change, same amount. Kid looked baffled, didn't budge on giving me the halfs though

Do you have a PUBlic grocery store chain in CO? Name ends in X. I am always courteous, never argue even when rejected, am dressed neatly, and ask the customer service folks, "Hello, I would like to get a count on your SSCC for half dollars", and take it from there. Some stores state it is against policy, corporate or otherwise, to access the machine, some can't figure out the accounting (sscc is SHORT, office is OVER, at the end of the day), you can offer to buy them, either cash into the till, or cash into the bag. It is hit or miss. Some stores/cashiers/managers are helpful and are fine with the process, know how to do it, some are not.

It is tricky, as the counter keeps track of the coins, and has to be re-set if you remove them. One manager said yesterday "they would do it just this one time". One store indicated $36, yet had only $5.50 and CASH in the bag. The bag is in the back left of the machine, and it helps to know the process/accounting/lay of the land.

I am 3 of 5 yes locally, although one or two will likely shut me down next time. I am 0 for 7 in a neighboring city, and 6 for 8 yes yesterday in another city. I have a new strategy I will pursue for the "no" stores at the ready next time. We shall see...

Never argue too much, be polite, take note of the name on the badge, have your counter "argument" ready. The machines I am accessing take a percentage, and removing coins does affect that bottom line, and the stores account for the sscc every day. This IS HIT OR MISS, and like I said, I was 0 for 7 in the big city next door. BE KIND and confident and UN-ATTACHED to the outcome, please.

We all know rules are subject to interpretation. You may get a no one day, a yes another. If you get a yes, and in 4 months it's a no, take it like a kind hearted champ. The chain used to be easy gong about this, not now....

I wish I had done this years ago.
