The machine gun emplacement on the Iron Age site

Today i helped our archies another time. It's a large Iron Age site which will be gone soon due to enlarging of a sand pit. I detect in a loose pattern to find spots to place the trenches.

A couple acres to detect....

2 or so hrs into the hunt i was called by the supervisor because something was spotted in the dredgerbucket and dumped on the excavated material. As soon as i swung the coil at that spot i had a lot of high pitch signals. .50 cal casings. And a lot of them. You could clearly see the discoloration in the trench where some kind of hole had been. When we opened the trench a bit further more casings turned up. I was thinking MG nest then.

A couple more items turned up i didn't have pics of, like door handle, door hinges probably coming from doors used to cover the hole.
Now it's up to the archies to excavate the hole and find whats left there in late autumn 1944...

Not just yet. This excavation is recently started and will go till 2018. We'll see.
The other big one i was invited brought a Bronze dagger/knife laying on top of a big vessel as the only metal find.

The canteen and glove are German aren't they? Germans move out and G.I.'s take over the hole? Field phone lines. Can you tell if there was wire from both sides? Good luck Lu.

Not sure on the canteen, glove should be US Army. Just a guess because German gloves for barrel change are short.

It's all US ammo found, so i'm thinking it's part of the American front line. I found some olive drab plastics too, sticking out the ground, probably US rain coat. I'm no expert on phone cable, but looks like it was just dumped in the hole.
I'm out again tomorrow maybe more turns up.
