I thought that I had done all of the hunting that I was going to be able to do.  After all, we had received several inches of snow, and more days of just plain cold weather, which in turn makes the ground like cement.  So, I posted my yearly finds in the 2008 listings, and started thinking of spring.

Well, we got some nice warm weather that came thru, and melted the snow.  So, on the 28th I decided to go back out to the old air base one last time.  Really wanted to add to my silver totals for the year.  Was able to hunt for about 3 hours, but other than a little clad, didn't find much.  It was just as well, as the ground was really hard to dig in.  Ended the day with a nice 1929s wheatie, my 25th wheat of the year.

The next day, Terry (Icandigit) wanted to go out one last time, so we headed off to one of the oldest parks in the city, as he had an itch that only swinging for awhile will cure.  This park has been hit hard over the years, and mostly, when you do find a decent coin, it's just an older wheatie.  Well, the first signal that I get is a penny/dime reading at 4 1/2".  The ground was just as hard here as it was up at the air park.  I thought that I had made the hole big enough where I wouldn't damage the coin, but as you can see in the picture, I still scratched it a little.  This is the first silver coin that I've seen anyone find here in a lonnnnnnnnnnnggggggg time.  It was just a 1957 Rosie, but it gave me my 12 silver of the year.

I am quite sure that I will not make it out again tommorow, so I can safely say, this was my last hunt for the year.  Come on warm weather.

Happy huntin all.

Glad you were able to get out one last time, and I bet you're glad you did.

It sure means a lot when you pluck a piece of silver out of a place that's been hammered to death.
Happy New Year!
Mike

GLAD YOU GOT OUT AGAIN. NICE COINS. CONGRATS.

Great finds, friend. By the way, did I ever send you my DFX programs?

Thanks for the kind words.  No, you never did.

I WILL send them to you tomorrow. Sorry!

I'll be looking for them. I've been experimenting with a few changes on my own, and I've actually increased the depth by a couple of inches. It's amazing how deep a couple of the coins were that I was able to pull up. I also learned something yesterday. I forgot to recharge the power pack, so I went and got some batteries, and used them instead. I believe that the signal I got was stronger, and some of my readings were a little deeper. Don't know yet, if this was caused by using batteries, or if it was because the ground was frozen. Will work on that one next spring.

It's the batteries. You get more power out of AA batteries and the more power allows the machine to detect deeper. The trade off is in the cost of batteries and once the AA's start to lose juice, they go fast!

Way to go, Neb! Congrats on that extra silver for the year!

What about using rechargeables?
