Ok here is a quick update for all those needing info. On Tuesday the wind and surf was really pounding the beaches. But it was coming in more from the east than the north/east. There were some small cuts on some beaches. But it is mostly just rounding off the dune to a big slope. REMEMBER, after the hurricanes of 2004 the state and county pumped and dumped huge amounts of sand up and down the Treasure Coast beaches. The cuts that are now forming are ONLY into that NEW fill. It will take a storm much larger than this to cut the beaches back to the 2004 levels.

As of this morning the sand has started coming back in. The low tide area's are very mushy and soft. This may change as the winds change direction.

Beach check...

Chucks/Bonisteel, The cut there is old, No significant erosion although the waves at high tide were climbing the dune slightly. But still just causing a rounded off look north of Chucks. Low areas soft and mushy. The same if you walk north 1/4 mile.

Wabasso, Large cut in front of the Disney resort. But again this is into NEW fill. The cut right in front of the parking lots has not change since last month.

Basically the same at Turtle Trail and Seagrape beach accesses. Still have about 10-20 ft of dune to cut back to get to the 2004 levels. A little 04 debrise (trees) is showing down low.

I dont think these conditions are good for finding any Spanish Treasure. But you might hook up with a few pieces of lost tourist jewelry. Or some very small 1/2 reales could wash up from the sand coming in.

It took till sometime after 8am for the county to get around to unlocking the gates at Turtle Trail and SeaGrape today.

Hope this help everyone. But keep an eye on the storm, things can change very quickly.

Mitch1FL , thanks for the update. i will stay tuned. b

Thanks for the update and if you can, and its not to much trouble let us know if you see changes the next couple days.

I'm in Orlando and debating driving down, but if I'm only going to find modern clad and no chance of any thing older, I may just head to Daytona this weekend.

:) Good luck to you all (those who can make it to the beaches!); I can only dream of beach erosion while covered in 7" of snow and freezing my bum off in zero degree temps! Was once stationed in North Carolina and practically lived at the beach after a good storm...ahhh, the life!

Please post your lucky finds...love the great stories!

Hey mitch,
thanks for the info and update on the condition of the treasure coast beaches. I'm very interested in that area and the
1715 fleet and the artifacts, aarrggh i mean treasure matee.
Please keep us updated with whats going on up there, I'm in hollywood fl and may drive up Saturday morning to do
a little hunting. Is that a coin u found up there that's on ur message?
Also if possible keep us posted on finds on beaches that make the papers. Good luck matee.
thanks again

Thanks for the update. Its a long drive from Clermont and I'll make other plans. I'll have a novice detectorist with me and we'll hunt a freshwater site instead. ;D

Yes, that one of the 1st Spanish coins I found. The see more click on the tab "website" under that picture.

I did see a few small cuts this morning, but still mostly into all the new sand. The low end of the surf near the water is still very soft and mushy in most places.

i am heading to John Brooks park friday morning. I will update with beach conditions friday nite.

The question is if any of the out-of-towners are planning to drive to the Treasure Coast this weekend? :-\

Let's take a poll!

Based on the small cuts and minor erosion seen so far, does it justify driving there? Any tips ;) from the locals will help...

thanks :)

Moe

The tides have been really high, which is probably washing in any potential cuts. The high tides also prevents access to the long shore sloughs normally exposed at low tide. I'm not real optimistic.

Hey Mitch,

You made my mouth water ;)

I don't have any plans to travel to FL from MO but it's exciting watchin the weather channel & posts & thinkin about what could be...... ;)

Huge erosion in some parts of Florida. Other parts got more sand. Went to three different spots this morning in North Florida. Surf was really rough and high. Two spots had more sand than usual and one spot had significant erosion. Found some clad but then had to go to work.

went to John Brooks park Friday....still alot of sand and the tide was high....but the renourishment is slowly going away.....might not be enough for this year season unless we have a good north/east wind.....we shall see.....but my lunch at Archies was good LOL....

I am wondering if anybody went the beaches at Treasure Coast this weekend. How much sand was it there or erosion?

Sunday may be a good day (calmer seas)!

Happy Hunting!

Just got back from Jensen Beach. Beach is steep, no cuts, but there is a hell of a slough and drop off at the surf line. If only the tides were low...

Mitch your right on....big 6ft. cut at Chuck's and nothing but fill sand....maybe another 6ft we will see old
sand....pic's taken Nov 1st . 100 ft north of Chuck's...and Wabasso beach
