This past Saturday afternoon, RG and me parked the truck and set off in the woods in search of some relics. Little did we know that an hour later we would be digging a big hole full of broken glass and debris. The question was, "would we get to any good whole bottles before the sun went down?" neat bottles. i was digging in dump,s before i got in to detecting. look for the betters and poison bottles like the ones with the skull and cross bones. they have got a good price on them. you might know that

Hey...I gotta question....Are bottles the ONLY thing in these dumps ya'll search? Did folks back when have different types of dumps for different types of trash?

Wow, nice finds, I love bottles. When I'm detecting in the water,
I can feel them with my wet shoes. I"m always picking up bottles.

One of my favorite is a Coke bottle with a heart on each side and it
was made in Lima Ohio.

If you guys need a helper the next time out who likes to dig for bottles,
call me ha!ha! or e-mail me, I'll be on my way!

hey Slim.
bottle hunting is one of my favorite things to do besides MD. me and my Brother Jer will detect a site then locate the trash pit and dig them out. we have quite a few bottles. keep an eye out next time you go, there could be buttons, marbles, even coins, whatever people would throw away.

for all the nice comments. there is still more than 1/2 of this hole undug. i really want to get in and sift through all the dirt for old buttons, coins, jewelry, marbles, pipes, etc... i will be sure to capture it all on video.

I'd like to know what the mechanics are on a dig like this. I may be undertaking a similar site soon and need to know what kind of tools to take with me. Do you do any sifting, etc, use your MD along with a shovel, or just sight hunt? Nice haul by the way. Monty

to answer some of the above s

dumps like that could contain anything and everything. We find tons of iron objects as well as glass. A sifter will yield buttons, marbles, coins, tokens, etc... So far we have only dug on this site for 3 hours. I really want to hit it with the sifter. That's my favorite. As far as equipment, a detector doesnt do much good on a site like this, a sharp shooter shovel, a small handheld digger, and a wide bodied, short handled shovel are a must, a bucket to haul out your finds, and a camera to capture it all. Oh yeah - don't forget a good pair of gloves and long sleves to keep clear of the poison ivy and oak roots. ouch!

Hiya Slim,
Congrats on the lovely bottles. I Used to go bottle digging when i was living in the UK, many years ago, and i had GREAT fun. Found quite alot of nice old bottles too. My favourite ones are the old Cod Bottles with the glass marble in the neck.
Also thanks for sharing the Video clips too, they are a GREAT collection of GOOD times and GOOD finds.
