Last Wednesday Neil (kimsdad) and I received permission from a woman to detect
the yard of a home built in the late 1940's. It turns out that she and her sister were in the
process of organizing an estate sale for this weekend. As we were talking, she mentioned that
she had grown up in this house along with her sister plus, her two brothers and was also curious
as to what we might find in their yard.
The next day we arrived at the property around 10:30 and started our hunt. While I was hunting
the backyard, I would estimate that every third or fourth target I dug was a silver coin.
I had to keep pinching myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming this hunt.
During the 2-1/2 hours we hunted, I recovered no less than 21 Wheaties, 5 Jeffersons (one of
which was a silver war nickel), and 9 silver coins (yep, I had to pinch myself again).
In addition to the coins pictured below, I also found a nice Manoil soldier, a sterling silver ring,
a sterling St. Christopher's medal all of which I was glad to give the owner.
The highlight of the day was when Neil returned a HUGE initialed sterling & gold ring that once
belonged to one of the brothers in the family who saddly, passed away last year.
When Neil placed this ring in the owner's hand while saying "You might want this." it was
a wonderful moment to witness. This is the way all hunts should end.
Thanks for looking!
