I kept looking at it, thinking it was for sure copper, and kinda old looking. Finally I picked it up, and it was a 1919. I reached into my pocket for a penny or two to replace it with, but I had no change. I took a breath and looked at the cashier and said, "I'm a coin collector, and I'm going to take this penny." He looked at me with a bemused/whatever look, and I went on my way.

The end.

Way to take control of the situation...sometimes if you want a coin, you gotta go Ronnie on 'em!

Great story, and the best part is you didnt make up some lame excuse or lie!

PS - I'm happy to open rolls of CENTS, but when I take a coin out of the tray at the gas station, it's a PENNY. That's my personal moral code for numismatic correctness.
