There's a guy in the park waving a knife

Went to my local park today where I've been hunting for 6 years. Not much interesting in the way of finds. Just some clad, lots of the usual pull tabs and a 9mm luger shell casing for about an hour and a 1/2 worth of swinging. I had been there about a 1/2 hour and was tamping down a plug that I had just dug when I looked up and saw a local patrol officer approaching. He asked how I was doing to which I replied "getting lots of fresh air". He then said that someone had called 911 and said there was a guy in the park waving a knife and in the same breath he said "but he didn't mention you had a metal detector". In my left hand was my detector (I'm a southpaw) and in my right hand was my digging tool, pinpointer and a towel which is usually the way I walk around when I'm swinging. He just smiled and said he ran my plate in the parking lot (the only vehicle in the lot) and was I Mr. Glunt, to which I replied "Yes". He then said "well, good luck" and went about his merry way and it turned out to be a nonevent. What really kind of irked me was that someone would use the 911 emergency system for such a call and then leave out a detail such as my 6' long metal detector.

People are strange.

It is because of your "Killer" Avatar ;)

Re: There's a guy in the park waving a knife

True, but at least you didn't get a strange Policeman too.

Re: There's a guy in the park waving a knife

Got a similar story. Friend of mine had a surprise visit by the Humane Association because some ignorant busy body called to report horses being blinded and left in a field to die.

What this moron actually saw was horses turned out in a pasture with fly masks on. A couple of the horses loved to lay down in the sun and that's exactly what they were doing.

If you aren't familiar, a fly mask is something that goes over the horse's eyes to protect them from flies. Horses take very little time to get used to these masks. They are comfortable. And the horses get peace of mind because they aren't being tormented around their eyes by flies.

The Humane officers showed up, took one look at the field and got back in their vehicle.

My friend was beyond angry when she saw them because she takes great pride in the care of her horses, several of which were adopted from abusive backgrounds.

The Humane association officers came up to the house and explained. Both my friend and the officers laughed very hard and the officers apologized for causing any distress.

The only bad part was the person who reported the "blinded" horses did so from a cell phone as they were driving by the pasture. Personally I would have tried to track them down to educate them about horses and fly masks.

Knowledge is power!

Tricia,

I'll bet it was a cell phone call since the only person I saw in the park was a guy pushing his kid in a stroller and they never got closer than about 50yds.

I never had that happen but I have thought about it so I always slide my digger into my trash portion of my pouch after I dig and rest my hand on the handle. Although a few times while hunting in parks located in Newark, NJ I've pulled it out when shady characters were approaching and it usually makes them change course.

My Story,

Someone drove by and called it in that I was waking around with a rifle.... Cop drive by and then parked close enough to let me hear him call it in that it is a metal detector, not a rifle, then he smiled and wave at me and drove off....

That's the way it's done! Gotta love those cops that actually do their job and protect us and decide when some moron citizen is just that. A moron. Keep digging and the next time you see someone give you a funny look, smile and say, "Yup, I'm detecting, and I've found and handful of these $500 dollar value gold coins under that tree right over there", and watch how fast they run to the cops. A very intelligent person that I admire and respect told me once, "The world is full of stupid people... and lots of them." I think I'm going to change my quote at the bottom to say that...or maybe I will make it say "Never underestimate the stupidity of people." Yes. That's it.

Guy walking around the park with what looks
like a knife; I don't know anything about MD'ers.

"Well officer, I don't know nothing about the young
girl that was raped and mutilated under the slides
in the tot lot. But......I did see someone yesterday
that looked like he may have been carrying a knife."
Now that is dumb >:(

Better safe than sorry. :-\

Glad someone called.

have a good un............

I like this quote!...........

" IMAGINE WHAT HORRORS WOULD WALK THE STREETS, IF PEOPLES BODIES WERE AS

UNDERDEVELOPED AS THEIR MINDS"

I think it is appropriate in this case.

Re: There's a guy in the park waving a knife

I could see if the guy was covered in blood and swinging a rifle.....then I would call the authoritie's.....not to mention listening to the police scanner on his headphone's.....Total Idiot's.....

Re: There's a guy in the park waving a knife

I was a street cop for a long time. I used to stop when I would see other people in the parks, etc metal detecting. I would approach them and say “Sir, you need to leave the park”. When they would ask why I would say “because all of the Mercs in this park belong to me and I will be back with my XLT to dig them up later”. I met a lot of great people that way and had some good laughs. Don’t be afraid of the cops, they a have a duty to show up and investigate what your doing. Most of them realize it’s the result of some half witted person calling in and would rather be elsewhere harassing a real criminal, or metal detecting themselves. BTW, being a cop on the streets for eight or so hours a day is a GREAT way to find hunting spots! ;)

It might be visually horrid, but sure would make things easier and save alot of time finding out by other means. :o

Unbelievable. Here's another relevant quote,

"The two most common elements in the Universe are hydrogen and stupidity."
