Last summer my son and I stopped at a new beautiful visitors info center for the Tillamook National Forest.
Went inside and asked if we were allowed to metal detect in the forest.
The answer was yes for anywhere including campsites.
But if we found very old things to let them know and not disturb them. OK.
Walking back out I looked at the waterfall and pond in the front.
It was about 2' deep and the bottom was not yet covered in coins but close.
Ummmm.........

No we did not.
