Oh, it's not that they're worthless for I hear they do make very good water hunting machines. They're water proof and built like an army tank. And, out in more trash free areas with mild soil they can get very good depth.
I bought the Excal in the spring of 2005 about the same time Rod and Floater got their machines. In fact, we all communicated about it and decided to go with the Excalibur.
Now what I'm going to write is my take on this and others may not agree (in fact I'm sure there are those who don't).
The Excalibur 1000, in my opinion, is a very poor land hunting machine for most areas. I used it through the summer of 2005 and had my very worst year of THing. I found my machine got very poor depth in many areas and the signal jumped all over the place. It was slow in retune and just about drove me nuts in high trash areas.
I ended up sending it back to Minelab (American center) to have it totally checked out. The machine tested as perfect and they quickly returned it to me. I then sold it at a considerable loss to someone who wanted it for water hunting.
This year I rehunted the same spots with my Tesoro and I've been busy digging and cleaning coins and relics since spring. There's one very small spot in front of my house where an old tree stands. I covered every inch of this area last year with the Excal. This year using the Tesoro I dug in that exact same spot the following:
1) V nickel at approx. 3 inches deep
2) Indian Head approx. 3 inches
3) Silver Rosie approx. 5 inches
4) Large gold pin - approx. 2 inches
5) 1930's toy car - approx. 12 inches
6) 2 pieces of float copper - approx. 8 inches
7) Gold Heart Pendant - Approx. 2 inches
IN MY OPINION, any of the top Fisher, Whites, Garrett, Tesoro machines are vastly superior to the Excalibur 1000 when it comes to land hunting. In fact, for land hunting I believe the Ace 250 is a better machine.
Just my thoughts now please excuse me while I dodge the rocks!
