I've owned my Explorer SE for about 2 weeks now. Been out 9 times to an old school and a park. All I dug was pulltabs and one penny :x I figured I'd use the learn mode to help me learn the tones faster and I used silver and clad coins as accepted targets . I took the Explorer to a park down the road to test it out with the new learned pattern. In less than an hour I dug 18 pennies and one clad quarter! Only dug one piece of a can because it had a iffy signal but I dug NO pulltabs! I really learned the tone for the pennies. I was getting VERY frustrated and about to put the Explorer in a closet and try it next spring because of all the signals it was receiving and all the tones. Boy am I glad I didn't! Now I can't wait till tomorrow to detect! I think this is the way for me to learn the Explorer SE. If you're having problems give this a try.

Glad it worked for you.Did you dig any nickles???
I finally tried my SE an eliptical coil on all metal mode and ferrous tones.I have hunted my yard with a CZ6a,explorer XS,Explorer 2,and my SE. AND I FOUND AN OLD INK PEN AND A 1916 BUFFALO 5 CENT!!!
Keep playing with the settings and learning new stuff all the time........

No nickels yet! But no pulltabs either! Seems like every tone before this coin pattern I dug a pulltab. To me this coin only pattern is a giant leap forward in learning the Explorer SE. Now I can take my time and take baby steps and really learn this machine.

Just remember if you are cutting out nickles and tabs you will miss some rings and maybe gold too....

I used a Buffalo and a modern nickel when I made the pattern. I even used my wedding band. I still haven't dug any nickels yet. Today I thought I had one but it was a pulltab ::) What a fun day...... 3 quarters, 2 dimes, and about 20 pennies in less than an hour and only 1 pulltab and a top to a pop can :)

Isn't it great when you finally figure things out. I have the Xterra 70 and dug everything and was getting discouraged too, then I set my mind to it and started listening instead of watching the darn display and wala, now I'm getting the hang of the tones and what there referring to. So like you, enjoying it more and going hog-wild now. Good luck and listen to those tones. Joe
