Any creeks or rivers in the viccinity?
I think this is the top part of one section of an old cane fishing rod. The top part you stick the next section in.

Here's a pic, even has the pin like your's but not hte nice detailed "lip" rim.

Love the photoshop Breezie. Lol. I think your onto something here. I have a bunch of old bamboo rods. The ferrule would explain the nail in the middle. It would have to be a big cane pole by the size of the opening compared to the penny. I gave a 17 foot one that's pretty big for deep sea fishing. It was my great grandfathers
