Thoughts on CW calvary finds

Ive been researching a Confederate calvary camp and finally had a breakthrough with my research. So after scoring permission for the area I set out.

I begun my search for the camp about 4:00-4:30. I started digging small round balls early in the hunt. I never write a site off as CW unless i begin finding minie balls, so finally i found one, but just one. I also located a horseshoes, 1940 wheat cent and small flat button.

I ran out of daylight around 5:45, and the signals were still coming, there is so many signals in this small area i just ran out of time, i also skipped over some of the larger signals, i suspect to be horse shoes, i would normally dig but i was just pressed on time. The amount of modern trash or trash in general is very little.

My only concern is all of the bullets appear fired. It is a small flat clearing with a steep ridge on one side and a steep bank down to a creak on the other, my theory is maybe the camp was attacked or an ambush was laid in this area.

The variety of bullet sizes supports the theory of CSA involvement. Especially bushwacker calvary units of the area, armed with shotguns and mostly pistols. When the weather improves i will clear the creak. In the meantime i will work the area and hillside above, maybe the camp was on the hill and they fired down on some unlucky Yankees.

I'd go back to the suspect horseshoe signals. They could be a stirrup. You never know. Good luck

Finding so many fired bullets in a relatively small area suggests a firing range. We found one a few years ago, and there were a variety of different caliber round balls, but very few Minie Balls. We know for sure that it was a Union firing range. We ended up finding the camp about a mile away. The below pictures are what we found at the range and then what we found at the camp in one day...

Good potential site and will be interesting to know what else is there and on property nearby. Best thing too, it's not been hunted with all those good signals still there. Definitely where they fired lots and perhaps they were discharging their weapons here before entering the camp area. The iron you find will let you know for sure if it's a camp or not.

I've found two places in Cavalry camp's where soldiers had unloaded their pistols by firing them into the ground or a stump, I assume so they could refresh the loads in them...d2

Here is my 2nd trip to the site, the Indian head came from a nearby house site, its dated 1885. 9 of the small round balls were found in a very small area maybe 4x4ft, also located amongst the balls was chunks of thin iron, the piece on the left one of the larger, could this have been canister shot?, i especially like the small pulled ball near the center, it has a spiral screw hole.

The balls near the iron are on the left, the copper casing appears to be 58 caliber
