Jewelerguy and Ia.fur.trade are correct... it is definitely a US Army collar-disc insignia, in service from 1910 to 1924. Yours is missing the screw-post which was soldered onto its back. For confirmational photos and info, go here:

WW I - I FOUND A BUNCH OF THOSE AT A WW I TRAINING CAMP WHEN I WAS A KID - LOOKS LIKE SCREW IS BROKEN OFF
TO BAD - THEY SELL FOR LIKE $20 AND UP IN GOOD SHAPE
