In actual historical fact, the Colt firearms company, from its beginning in the 1840s up to today, has always sold more of its pistols to Civilian buyers than to the US Military. (With the probable exception of the .45 Colt Model-1911 semi-automatic pistol.) My point is, lots and lots of Civlians owned Colt revolvers before, during, and after the civil war. So your unfired 1850s-60s Colt bullet is not as "out of place" in a Pittsburgh backyard as you think.
