Looks like a small caliber Colt

Agreed. The M1855 Colt Root or similar - the .31 cal mold even has the inset base.

Looks like a winner to me. Kind of out of place in a backyard in Pittsburgh though :icon_scratch: Thanks guys.

I found eight empty .45 ACP casings under a wood floor in a janitor's closet of a Methodist church. :dontknow: You just never know.

In actual historical fact, the Colt firearms company, from its beginning in the 1840s up to today, has always sold more of its pistols to Civilian buyers than to the US Military. (With the probable exception of the .45 Colt Model-1911 semi-automatic pistol.) My point is, lots and lots of Civlians owned Colt revolvers before, during, and after the civil war. So your unfired 1850s-60s Colt bullet is not as "out of place" in a Pittsburgh backyard as you think. :)

To think this was probably dropped in the mid-19th century in an area with no homes at the time (Castle Shannon was founded in 1917ish), which later became the backyard of a house that was built in the 40s that is owned by someone that happens to metal detect and was found at about 3 inches...

Makes it a unique find for my area. I guess you just never know.
