just adornment i would think, the young brave was thrilled with his kill maybe,or i think they thought the spirit would help them if they kept it close too them.but i am far from a professional,i herd they would dig a hole and cover it up while inside and tie a rabbit or something above them when a eagle came to get the bait they would grab it.

You are right they would dig a pit and lay limbs on top, then place a fur piece on top and move it ever so often. When the eagle or hawk crashed into the limb pile they would grab them by their legs. They used the feathers, bones and the heads for adornment and they may have eat the meat, I can't see them letting a big hunk of meat go to waste. The eagle was not has holy to them has a lot of people think. They kept them for pets also, but made rattles out of the heads, necklace out of the claws, war whistles out of the bones, and of coarse bonnets from the feathers.View attachment 904536
