Tobacco Roots

Has anyone had any experience prospecting for nuggets with a metal dector in the Tobacco Root Mountains west of Three Forks, MT?

I have family that lives there and am considering spending some time there this coming summer.

Any advice would be helpful and greatly appreciated.

I think the Tobacco Roots would be a fantastic place to metal detect. My husband and I used to go camping and exploring up in the Tobacco Roots quite often. There are old claims up there all over - we'd see old tobacco cans nailed to trees with old claims - and many old abandon mine shafts. This was in the days before I was into metal detecting, but I think it would be a fantastic area. We used to head up with our Jeeps from Norris (coming from Three Forks, turn right on the gravel road that goes past the gas station). There was an area of about 4 or 5 lakes right near each other, and we used to stay in an old cabin up near the lakes. There were many, many old mine shafts and piles of the waste rock up that way. Whether you find anything or not, the scenery is stunning. Best of luck to you.
