...and my first Barber quarter! Boy, was I happy. I'm not much of a dancer, but I really wanted to do a jig.

Old park site, totally pounded by other detectorists 20 years ago, but they missed a couple old coins. The other day I found a '23 Merc there.

I think the nails have been masking a lot of targets. This site has yielded a lot of good finds this year, but only after ridiculous amounts of work digging trash. I wish I had all the junk in one place to show you.

From the hole where the Barber came out of, I pulled out TEN nails, no exaggeration. Old ones, too, all different sizes.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention, this Barber was about 4 inches down, evidently on its side next to a big black magnetic rock. How I managed to keep from gouging it, I'll never know. I didn't even see it come out of the hole!!! I checked the plug and the little pile of soil, and there was a loud, smooth signal.

You would think a silver quarter would always be easy to see, well this one was sticking out right there in the soil that I'd piled on top the plug... I almost missed it.

P.S. Don't y'all worry, I'll have a pic of the nails I found. It's going to be a doozie.

Also found some decent iron relics, but haven't taken a pic yet.

Wait til you see the 3-foot scythe blade I also found...

Great find ! Wonder why theres so many nails at a park ?? Maybe old houses and buildings were there at one time ???

Pretty sure there was a house there, or a barn. I think it burnt down before they bulldozed the land to make a park.

I saw this kind of situation at another park not too far away from this one, where I started finding nails and bits of door hardware. At that place, there was one area in particular where I bet there'd be cool stuff, because the ground was loaded with iron signals. I just didn't feel like digging them. Sometimes there are houses people forgot were there.

Anyway, at this site the best things are typically 6 to 9 inches down, out of the range of the old White's coinmasters that used to sweep over this place a lot. In theory a Coinmaster can find coins to 6 or 7 inches, but in this mineralized nightmare of a place, G.E.B./Disc mode has a practical limit of about 4 inches on coin-size targets (that is just in my experience, yours may vary).

The Barber would definitely have been missed by the older machines, because even I missed it until I dug out some of the nails and kept going over the spot like 20 times. The big piece of iron ore next to the coin might be another reason nobody had ever found it.

OHHHH.....you tease! :D Awesome find! 8)

And waiting on the pics of the other stuff too!

Congrats! Nana ;)

Sweet Quarter. I've found 3 barber dimes this year but have yet to find a barber quarter. Not so easy - so good job. My son Nate found a gold ring a couple weeks ago while digging a rusty nail. Ring wasn't being masked just close enough. :)

sometimes you need to take risks and dig iron good example!

Hey! Congrats on the nails!

And too, the Barber is okay I guess ::)

Badger

Good job and excellent find!!! Watch out the Grim Reaper doesn't come looking for his blade though. WTG!! HH

Good job- persistance pays!! Love that silver! ;D
Now days trash in a yard is picked up, but before power mowers, lawns were more like weed patches.
I think a lot of trash was just thrown into the weeds- they'd never see it!!
congrats & HH

great coin !!! ya baby.......... ;) :D ;D 8) :o

you have to haul a ton of metal trash before you find the good stuff..... :)
