I am no diamond expert, but that setting looks like real gold. DO you have a size reference?

Never can find my caliper when I want it. On a tape measure the stone is about 1/4 inch.

OPen back...good sign
The metal looks soft...good sign
the "stone" seems to have crisp sharp edges...good sign, but honestly I don't think anyone can give you a positive ID from a picture.

You need to look for occlusions in the stone with a 10x jeweler's loupe. If the gold setting came out of the ground shiny I'd say there's a good chance it's real. What is it--a pendant?? The pitted or crude looking setting is a bit odd though unless it's very old. A jeweler will easily tell you if it's real.

I think it was a pendant. It did come out of the ground shiny. You can still see some dirt in the hole on the back. Old would be good :) I did find it in an area that I have found coins from the 1800s. Looks like a trip to the jeweler is next.

Good luck, hope the item tests better than it looks in the pictures.
I see copper color on the edges of the setting, what looks to be loss of plating, missing post of
typical and common earring setting with no hallmarks. Four prongs for a valuable diamond... no.
I love to be wrong! From the pictures.. I wouldn't buy it and that is what I do for a part of my living.
Do have it checked by a reputable higher end jeweler, don't let them low-ball you, If they want to buy it then get it checked further before you sell.

Thank you. Thats why I posted the pics because I knew someone would know more about these things than I do. The color difference is the lighting with a white light in front and a regular light behind. One way or the other I'm happy with it :)

My guess? Just from what I see, either cut glass or manmade "diamond".

Still so very neat to see that on the ground ain't it! Good eye!

Please let us know how it comes out.

HH!

Get a pro to check it out...

take it to any mall jeweler, they will know

Cameras just don't capture true color, so it is impossible to tell even if the setting is real or not from the picture, I was going on the pits, and scratches which suggests that it is soft.

And again, it is IMPOSSIBLE to tell if the stone is real or not from a picture, as far as how many prongs, that has nothing to do with nothing.

Admittedly the possibility of it not being real is a lot greater than it being real, but only someone who really knows, will know in person. It's easy to call it junk, and those that have have a good chance of being right, but when you do get it checked take along your camera, and ask the guy if it is possible to tell from the picture.

Do the fog test by breathing on it. Carbon wont trap the heat of ones breath, so if it doesnt fog it COULD be a diamond. Also take a steel pin and rub the girdle of the stone perpendicularly and if it shaves the pin it COULD be a diamond. But the only true sure fire way is to check for inclusions and do a therm test

It's like Rick stated it's hard to tell from a picture where the stone is real or not. Looking at the setting the metal is really pitted(crude) from the casting and usually gold settings are a lot smother and fine looking in appearance.
Good luck with the visit at the jeweler's hope it's real. Anything looking like that is a total nitro moment when it's coming out of the dirt.

The basket setting in of itself leads me to consider it real. Yup.... if you dont have a diamond tester or an acid kit... then it would be worth the gas money to consult a jeweler.

A close call, but I'll go with fake. Thinking it would have more prongs , if real.

Hope it is real, though. Good luck and let us know the outcome.

TCK

Since the thing with the hole is at right angle to the diamond I am going with a stick pin that the pin parted company with the jewel and it got lost. I'd at least be taking it to a jewelry store and asking someone who knows what they are looking at.

Here watch this, instead of me typing it out...

Keep @ it and HH !!
