todays surface finds and a question

Now the qestion.......It looks like the patine if flakeing off.I can't find a edge with me fingernail.
Has anyone ever seen that????I surfaced found it last week.

Nice finds. I've seen a similar occurrence, but only on Quartzite artifacts, not flint. I have a few examples myself.
 
On the first pic it almost looks like grass or something like that was stuck to it as well...Could a hafting agent like pitch or sap have stained it?
 
I think this piece shows the "flaking" you were referring to. I have also tried to catch an edge of one, but there not on the surface.

Neogeo are you refering to water getting in the smallest of cracks then freezeing and pop off a flake or even split stones in half I see alot of this in the flint /chert types .
 
I can see that,but I don't think that is the case with this one.They cross over current hindges,and they will stop a flake dead.Thanx
 
If they appear to stop a flake dead in its tracks then I doubt it is a stain caused by a hafting agent like pitch or sap.
 
sorry .I ment a flake would stop if it hits a stack,the discoloration does not.
