I went out to our local municipal park today and was out there for about 3 hrs. I found the following, including my second Mercury of 1942. Our ground down here really eats up all the pennies, I wonder why? I cleaned up my mercury with lemon juice/salt and colgate toothpaste and a brush. The other that looks cool is the $200 Mexican Pesos which has on the buttom 175 Aniversario De La Independencia De Mexico (175th Aniversary of Mexico's Independence) 1985 but this coins are no longer in circulation.

Nice job on the silver still have yet to get my first mercury dime.

Nice job on the silver Congratulations. As for those pesky penny's, they turn to crap up here in Ohio also. They didn't make them to last I guess. Now if you find a Wheat penny that will be a different story. They will be ok.

Nice job retrieving the merc and that $200 peso coin is real cool too.Unfortunately thats the life of the zincolns anymore.WTG!!

Great job. Those Merc's are beautiful coins.

Nice Merc. I have dug three myself. I think maybe the fertilizer used in the parks eats the zincs. Never happens that way to coppers. Not here anyway.

Congrats on the merc. As for the pennies, it's the zinc they make it out of. It will happen in any state. Just lay one dated after 1983 on the dirt in the yard. In about a month you should see the changes. A penny before 83 won't do that because of the amount of copper in it. In 83 they took out the copper and replaced it with zinc and nickel I believe. Cost too much to make with copper any more. That is why they look so bad and disintegrate after being in the ground awhile.
