Hello everyone! I was going out this morning with one of my hunting buddies to hit a few places. And before I took him to the places I had secured permission to hunt I took a wrong turn and found myself looking at one of those spots you see and say to yourself "I bet there's some goodies here" anyway to make a long story short. I went to the closest house to the site and secured permission to hunt. We immediately started hunting, It was very quiet with not alot of signals, then I get some "deep iron" signals on my minelab. I moved over to the right of where I had been detecting and I walked about 10 feet and I get a textbook silver signal!!! I thought it's probably just a modern quarter. I got a perfect 00-29 signal on my Explorer SE and when I switched over to my smartfind screen the box was buried in the upper right hand corner!! I dug a nice big plug about 4 inches deep and ran my pinpointer along the bottom and I get a solid tone on it I made sure to stay away from the actual target and popped a large section of the hard dirt out with my Lesche and I saw a dirtball go in one direction, and something sorta shiny fly to the other!!! I reached over and grabbed it and saw it was a Barber Half Dollar!!!! My first Barber Half!!!! I have only found one other Silver Half dollar and it was a 1940's Walking Liberty I found last year. anyway, it turned out to be a 1899O Barber half in decent shape!!! I did'nt even scratch it!!! after we hit that site I took my buddy John to one of the sites we had planned on hitting that day before we got sidetracked. the ground was really hard and dry and we weren't finding much, then I get a sweet deep signal that was reading like a deep Indian Head penny (07-45) I cut a plug about six inches deep and get a signal on my pinpointer but I still need to go deeper, I pop another 2-3 inches out of the hole and the signal is gone!! I check the pile and there it is, a 1870 Franco-Prussian War medal Made from Captured French Bronze Cannons!!!!! Beautiful shape and I absolutely cannot believe I did not scratch it!!!! well, that's my day in a nutshell. thought I would share some pics and show my finds. I haven't found very many things lately worth posting but I thought I would post these.

i guess im gonna have to find something pretty good to beat that for find of the month at the next club meeting...nice half, and the metal is pretty friggin cool too....sweet....Just where did you make that wrong turn??????

Thanks Dave, I'll Take you there sometime. I was turning the truck around and saw a road sign. the name on the sign was familiar(I recognized it from some of my research) so I drove up the road a little way came around the corner and saw this super sweet site!!! after talking to the neighbors we found out the building burnt down long ago but the front and rear steps were still there. I found the half dollar on the fringe of the site where there must be less fill. we need some rain, certain parts of the site look to have been filled in, and with the ground so dry it's getting hard to find the really deep stuff. John was there and saw me find it, then later in the day when I found the Prussian medal he said "you found coin of the month and relic of the month in one day!!!" I'm on the trail of a couple of super sites!! I have a little more research to do to narrow down the exact spots. one is an 1830's-1850's Mill site near me, and an awesome picnic grove where an entire town held a picnic, and made dinner for an entire union regiment in 1862 there must have been 2,000 people there on that one day!!!! They even fed the soldiers on tables set up in the picnic grove!!! it is in Southern Illinois but not near Benton. I want to take a bunch of the guys from the club when I pinpoint the site and get permission.
