Through a collection I had when I was younger and just recently stumbled upon, plus my recent CRH efforts, I am about to have a full roll of silver war nickels. That is 2.25oz of silver. I know that selling them will incur some loss for they are only 35% pure. I'm thinking of trading them up for a pair of ASEs, condition/grade doesn't matter. I know that ASEs typically incur a bit of a premium when you pay cash. Would it be unreasonable for me to expect to get a pair of ASes for a roll of 40 war nickels in a straight up trade with a coin/bullion dealer? I know all dealers aren't reasonable, but if the majority of you guys think that is a wise choice, I think I'm going to check the dealers in my area and see if I can pull off such a trade.
The main reason I hoard silver is to have some "money" to use in case our fiat money becomes so under valued that the corallary of Gershram's law kicks in and people will only do business in precious metals. I like the idea of having some dimes and war nickels around for the smaller transactions, but I think I have a large and diverse collection of silver 90% quarters and dimes to cover me for those possible smaller transactions in this possible situation. The difference between a silver dime and a war nickel is only ~0.01ozt of silver, so I think trading in the war nickels will be optimal (as opposed to trading in the dimes, because the dimes are more pure). With that said, thinking I have my bases covered for the small stuff, will it be worth it? If I do need to sell for cash in some situation, I think it will be easier to liquidate the ASEs instead of the war nickels
And, I also think that shooting zombies with a shotgun full of 90% dimes to kill them will be more effective than a shotty full of 35% war nickels
I know some of you almost always trade up for ASEs because of the purity and space saving advantages, and I know some of you will never trade up no matter what, but please provide your thoughtful advice!
