To those of you who have recently joined the forum,

1.Let me first start off by saying please read the rules at the top of the forum before asking questions. This is not to be rude, or to discourage you from asking your questions, its just that most of the questions asked by new CRHers can be answered within the rules post. Again, there is nothing wrong with asking questions, but it is good to make them count. It shows initiative on your part if you can search out the answer before asking the question. If, after searching the main posts on the forum, you cannot find an answer to a question, feel free to let it fly.

2. A few years ago when I joined the forum I learned that there are just some questions that you do not ask. If you find yourself about to ask one of these below questions please refrain, and I will explain as we go here:

* Which banks produce the most silver if any silver at all? Or what banks are producing silver ?

- If you have any idea how this hobby works, then you will know that this is not a reasonable or respectable question. Mostly due to the fact that this hobby takes a lot of time and effort. Those who have been around this forum for a while have spent years building good relationships at their banks, so why would you think it is ok to ask them to give out this hard earned information? That being said, if you really want to know the answer to the question, you have to put in the TIME and the EFFORT yourself. Take the time to visit the banks in your area and get to know the people that work there. Instead of just take take take, give a little something back every once in a while. Also, remember that relationships are built over time and not overnight. If you make yourself the customer they want to see, then it will amaze you what bank tellers are capable of.

* Where are the best places to dump coins at?

- Again, as mentioned above, this is one of those elements that you have to figure out yourself. Whether someone answers you or not, this is not a reasonable or fair question to ask any member of this forum. To get you going in the right direction, find a bank that does not charge fees to members for using their machines. That is all you need to know.

* How do I know if I have someone's dumps or not?

- You don't. There are going to be a few obvious times where you know you are looking through previously searched coins, but the rest of the time it is all about trial and error.

Again, this post is in no way discouraging you from asking questions. It is, however, encouraging you to do your own research first. Out of respect for the people who have put in years to earning this information for themselves, please do not ask these questions. If you do not want to put the work in, this is probably not the hobby for you.

HH and thank you to all those members out there who took the time to create posts for a guy like me to learn the hobby a few yars ago,
JJ

Hey JJ, I am a month old at CRH. I guess I lurked for a few days to a week before signing up because I had those questions in the beginning but when I signed up I never thought about creating a whole NEW topic about it, I guess I learned as I went and you amazing guys helping me from the beginning with my "New Kid to CRHing" post, I didn't really ask questions but instead asked you guys for tips which you guys gave in a tremendous amount ;D, but I get what you're saying about the new people, just coming and posting new topics for every question about this hobby when mostly everything is in the very top of the forum, or even if you can't find it in that post, just PM someone instead of creating a topic. I've asked some people through PM's some questions about coins I had and they responded kindly, so I think just PM instead of creating a new topic would be highly appreciated by all members of all seniority! :tongue3: :icon_thumright:

Excellent post!!!!

Finding places to dump was definitely the hardest part when I started CRHing. It still isn't easy, and the tellers don't like changing bags on the coin counters.

The other advice, and probably the most important:

GO READ THE OLD POSTS IN THIS FORUM, GOING BACK AT LEAST 20 PAGES.

The information is awesome, and invaluable. Silver might be $42 an ounce, but that information is PRICELESS!

There is no excuse for not doing research ahead of asking to be spoon fed someone's hard earned recipe for success. It is very sound advice to recommend self help and the way that OP JJ presents it is genuine, courteous, and right on.

I don't intended to imply a contradiction, but I do think there is another side of the issue to keep in mind though.

I'm new. I read and read and read and learned and learned and learned from the forum posts. I then experimented and learned some more. In a short time, I'd wager that I learned some things that haven't been posted about (at least not recently). Probably not any game changing secrets, just some things.

I caution against stifling the asking and answering of questions. While the questions being asked by us noobs might be the same ole tired questions that you've seen asked time and time again, there just might be some new, fresh answers to those questions and everybody might learn something useful.

In the end, we can all decide what topics we choose to follow and can decide whether or not any of them warrant a response or not. From what I've seen, there isn't a huge noise problem from newbs, just an occasional distracting chirp here and there.

So, how do I know which halves are silver?? :laughing9: :laughing9: :laughing9:
