A couple of weeks ago I went over to a school yard not far from my home to do a little detecting before it got too hot. There was an area about 50 feet from the school building where some drainage work was being done that I thought would be the easiest digging since the ground was so dry. Was only finding pop tops and pocket change when I noticed, just up ahead, a piece of metal sticking up. As I got closer, it appeared to be a toy gun barrel and the thought occured to me that kids aren't supposed to have toy guns at school. To my astonishment, it wasn't a toy at all, it was a .380 semi automatic hand gun... a very real one!!!! How the crew doing the work missed it is beyond me, it was nickel plate or stainless steel, pretty shiney. The clip was in it and it appeared to be loaded, was caked in mud, but, didn't appear to have been there long, no appearent rust or discoloration. Keep in mind, this was about 50 feet from an elementary school. I left it lay until I was ready to leave, didn't want to handle it for fear that it may discharge. The rest of the time I was there, I kept an eye open for a passing police car that I would have flagged down, didn't have my cell phone with me. When I was ready to leave, I gingerly wrapped it my towel, took it home, and called the police. They promply came, made a report, and took it away. I have a friend that works in the evidence room that is keeping up with it for me. At the moment, bolistics has it and they are trying to determine if it has ever been used in a crime. My friend there will keep me posted as it works it way through the investigation.
PRETTY SCARY STUFF!!! I'll keep everyone posted.
Has anyone else had similar finds?
