A couple of weeks ago I went over to a school yard not far from my home to do a little detecting before it got too hot. There was an area about 50 feet from the school building where some drainage work was being done that I thought would be the easiest digging since the ground was so dry. Was only finding pop tops and pocket change when I noticed, just up ahead, a piece of metal sticking up. As I got closer, it appeared to be a toy gun barrel and the thought occured to me that kids aren't supposed to have toy guns at school. To my astonishment, it wasn't a toy at all, it was a .380 semi automatic hand gun... a very real one!!!! How the crew doing the work missed it is beyond me, it was nickel plate or stainless steel, pretty shiney. The clip was in it and it appeared to be loaded, was caked in mud, but, didn't appear to have been there long, no appearent rust or discoloration. Keep in mind, this was about 50 feet from an elementary school. I left it lay until I was ready to leave, didn't want to handle it for fear that it may discharge. The rest of the time I was there, I kept an eye open for a passing police car that I would have flagged down, didn't have my cell phone with me. When I was ready to leave, I gingerly wrapped it my towel, took it home, and called the police. They promply came, made a report, and took it away. I have a friend that works in the evidence room that is keeping up with it for me. At the moment, bolistics has it and they are trying to determine if it has ever been used in a crime. My friend there will keep me posted as it works it way through the investigation.

PRETTY SCARY STUFF!!! I'll keep everyone posted.

Has anyone else had similar finds?

Wow, that's good that you find it and no kid!
I agree that its unbelievable that the workers did not see that or maby the didn't or just did not care?
Ive never been in the same situation yet, but i hope i will!
It's never wrong to find a gun! Hope next hunt will be better! :laughing9:

Don't know if you care about owning guns or not but depending on what state you live in you may have the right to have it returned to you once the police have checked it out. Might be worth looking into. In CA you could probably be arrested just for looking at it without a permit... Here in New Hampshire, on the other hand, we can buy them at the local flea market.. Private sale= no paperwork :laughing9:

I would demand it back if it has a clean back ground.

:notworthy:

My buddy PullTab Otis got this 9mm on the beach during one of our hunts. Someone had wrapped it on a dollar store bag and tossed it out at high tide. We had the cops come get it. Never heard back one way or another if it was used in a crime. In Washington you can no longer file claim for firearms. Sucks but oh well.

I'm in Virginia...can't file a claim for it, already checked. If the owner cannot be located, and the gun is clean, it gets destroyed.

scary yes at school and all but also kind of cool you,ll remember that hunt wont you

Hmmmmm Iam from Va. as well and Id check with more than one source about that..... :icon_scratch:

I'm from Illinois - nuff said there. You'd never see the gun again, even if its not been used in a crime.
