Have you thought about the X-5? It's great in trashy areas.

Minelab FBS 800 vs Sunray X8

Here are some specs for you: Sunray X8
  • diameter - 8"
  • weight - 1.0 lb
Minelab FBS 800 coil
  • diameter 7 3/8"
  • weight -1 lb 4oz
Measurements and weights taken with covers installed on both of them. And some pictures. FWIW I have both available for sale, just call or email me. (both new and used, used not on the website yet)

I have thought about it a lot! I'm back and forth on this one. I have a Compadre and though I'd use that in trashy areas, it's a very good detector just different technology. My Explorer ID's a lot better though, especially in trash.

The reason why I was contemplating the Sunray 8", is because if it's the same size as the minelab ei. bit over 7", than that's the coil to get. At full 8" though, it may be a little big for trashy areas. What I'm really looking for is a sidewalk specialist, as well as a "close to concrete" specialist, that sort of thing. The 8" coils may be it, right now, I'm leaning towards the 5".

You are welcome Detector Wars. I will say this about the Minelab FBS 800: a friend of mine keeps his on about 90% of the time in old, trashy home sites... he loves it in trash. Personally I use the stock coil then jump to the X5 in trash. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

I forgot to mention, there is an ever so slight increase in depth with the Sunray X8 versus the Minelab FBS 800. Not much, and barely noticeable, but it is there.

Hope that helps!

I recently traded my Pro coil for a X-8 and I'm glad I did. Separation like a smaller coil with the depth like a larger coil. For me it balances my Explorer near perfection. I can't say enough good things about it. It won't be coming off this season.

The X8 is my favorite smaller coil on my Etrac. Its really a great coil and light to boot.

Use all three on my Excalibur and my favorite is the little 5.5 Sunray. When I get into a really trashy area I turn down the sensitivity for even better separation. I've seen a few impressive vid's of the CTX's pulling Silver from Iron infested areas but after using the S-5 I really think one can come real close to the performance capabilities of the CTX, if not better. And being able to swap coils on the Excalibur really surpasses the CTX in over all versatility with more choices in sizes.

Silver last two trips out in a very trashy bay beach
All Silver coins were found with the S-5 in about 7 hours
Last 3 hours got the dive mask and silver ring with
the big 1000 coil in the deep
