Re: Two 1800's Coins

They look like Chinese "Cash" coins.
The smaller one might be 5 Cash, the larger 10 Cash.
1000 Cash = 1 Dollar
These were made for several hundred years in China at many mints.
They were probably dropped by a Chinese resident in the area.
All of the California gold mining camps had Chinese men working in them,
usually running support businesses (laundries, food-service, gambling, etc).

Re: Two 1800's Coins

The Chinese also did gold mining also. They were very efficient, as you would expect, often gleaning gold from areas that the whites had given up upon. There were many thousands of them. One time while walking a round Beale AFB in Marysville, CA I came across a large area with many little holes dug. I asked what that was and was told that was from the Chinese goldminers digging for placer gold.

Re: Two 1800's Coins

I've found a few just like these in an old mining town in the Sierra Nevadas a few years ago and I'm sure they date back from the 1800s as well, since that is when the chinese were there. Also, the area where I found them was where the chinese cabins used to be located. Lots of neat chinese pottery shards can be found in areas like this as well. Good finds!

I found these two Chinese coins at an 1850's mining camp near a local creek. I don't know anything about them but someone here might fill me in.

I'm hoping to get back there soon. I know that it is a good site. There is a large stacked rock wall as well.
What is a black and white gambling beam? I don't think I have ever seen one before.

Re: Two 1800's Coins

The first coin may be vietnamese instead of Chinese. the second is a one cash coin made between the 1740's and 1792. i have found several over the years. The Z on the top marks the emperor for that time period. way to go!
