Relic Hunting
I only started metal detecting this past spring, and I've enjoyed it so much I've spent nearly all my spare time doing it. I live in the Pocono region of Northeastern Pennsylvania, and commute everyday for my job in Northwest NJ-a ride which goes through nice country and passes Stokes State Forest. The border between NJ and PA is the Delaware river and the whole river region ( which includes Old Mine Road-maybe the oldest road in the US and loaded with old homes and homesites) is National Park Service and therefore strictly off limits. I tend to do much of my detecting in woods as there is so much of it in my area, and have located several old home-sites where I have found a good amount of relics mostly, but not all, of the Iron type.Since I hunt largely in the woods, I don't typically come across very many coins old or new, but a couple weeks ago I did find a V-nickel but it was too worn to even get the date.
Anyway a couple days ago I found my first silver- a 1936 Mercury dime in the wooded area alongside a brook I often go to. The very next day I found my first Colonial button which I think is copper (rang-up mid-fifties on my BH Platinum) it is quarter sized, very thin and plain with a broken shank.
Now that I'll soon have hunters to compete with ( the ones with bows and arrows and guns)I do expect to do more parks, fields schools, etc.where I'll hopefully experience another first- a GOLD ring!
