So two of my friends wanted to hunt today in Barre.
I suggested cellar holes in the middle of nowhere, but that got shot down.
We went to this sports field feathering two soccer, baseball, and one football field used by our middle and high school establishments.

They were ecstatic at the end of the grueling day.
Me; I was glad it was over!!
Nice coin hauls but it was tiring and unfulling!!

If this is what detecting was, I'd quit. Many clad but nothing very old. I'd rather find one 1800's button vs all this clad!!!!!!

Happy hunting.....

Amen. Just something fulfilling about unearthing a 200 year old coin or relic from the ground and thinking about who lost it.

I know what your saying ... old Cellar Holes are just about the best place to be in this hobby.
One crusty, beat up Large cent or Indian cent is better than finding a bucket full of clad coins any day..

Good Hunting !

I feel You too!! I’d take something old over clad any day. However I got a dual drum rock tumbler at Harbor Freight and clean the clad up with aquarium gravel and some other ingredients, and they work fine in a coin machine. I roll mine though. Can’t seem to justify paying a machine to take them. Anyway, Happy Hunting!!!

Will the coinstar take these dirty coins?
Hard to say...I tried with a bunch of really crusty coins and they were rejected....but on a positive note, the coins could jam...and they'll open up the machine....might retrieve some left over coins...

Once a year I clean my clad coins in a rock Tumbler - mine holds approx 2 to 3 lbs. of Dimes & Quarters.
Just add some a water, dish detergent and some aquarium gravel.
Let it run over night - wash the coins off - take them to Walmart's.
After this process 95% of the coins will be accepted by the Coinstar.

Sometimes clad gets as annoying as pull tabs and bottle caps, but if ya don't dig 'em, you could be missing out on some nice jewelry.
Btw, check around and see if a local bank or credit union has a coin machine. Some let account holders use them for free! I opened a savings account at a CU with a machine near me and just deposit all the clad. At the end of the year I have a nice total clad figure for the year and use it to buy md'ing accessories and goodies!

I have never tumbled my coins, just rinsed them of any dirt and sand, and then ran them through a coin counter either a Coinstar or a bank machine. Pretty much everything goes through except chewed up zincs.

One more thing about using Coinstar. If you choose the option to get an Amazon credit instead of cash you get the full amount of your coins.

I’m still somewhat of a newbie, so I don’t mind the clad. I would love to find silver and gold on every hunt, but I haven’t found that secret spot yet! At least the clad might buy you lunch or a drink.

there is a reason I have dug more seated coins than I have silver rosies and washingtons........I would rather dig old nails and sickle bar mower teeth all day than clad hunting. BUT, this is also the reason I have found almost no gold. So you know...to each their own

Agreed, the clad has become uninspiring. But I dig every penny signal keep a running tally of all clad. I have the Legend nearly 10% paid for in clad alone ($60.88 in March and April)
