Yesterday I got outside to dig for the first time in a long while, and hit an old house site. The family who lived there in the 1800s operated a tannery at a nearby creek. This was one of those nice sites that had no 20th century trash, aside from the occasional shotgun shell or rifle cartridge. Although I did nt find any coins, I did get these two nicer buttons. The one on the right has "Scoville Waterbury" backmark, and the other seems not to have a readable backmark. I would guess they date from the 1850s, but please share if you know anything about them.

Those are pretty cool buttons. Where abouts in Central Pa? Im from McElhattan, we have a lot of places around here that would be interesting to MD.

Great finds! Those must have been fun to dig up.

nice, civil war general service buttons. Good finds !

Awesome finds! I love the buttons!

Not knowing exactly what the back mark says - I offer these dates as a reference:

SCOVILL Mg. Co. / WATURBURY CT. 1850-1865
SCOVILL Mf''g Co. WATURBURY CT. 1850-1865
SCOVILL Mf''g Co. WATURBURY 1850-1865
SCOVILL Mfg Co. WATURBURY CT. 1850-1865

Hopefully it's one of these... referencing the backmrks only as they are all the same dates.
